Rainforest Arts is pleased to announce that Gera Scott Chandler of Amused Creations is our featured artist for May 2017.
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Gera has been gathering kelp and bark from her local beaches all her life. As a child, she would weave them into wall hangings and baskets. The west coast environment envelopes her in a creative cloak tinted with muted, misty colours and undulating textures. The sound of the waves and wind in the trees inspire mood and rhythm as she sketches her ideas. Gera uses a camera to capture natures colours and collects organic materials to stamp and weave into her work.
Polymer clay is her primary medium, which is a synthetic material that fires at 275 F. It can be sculpted, stamped, carved and even turned on a lathe or potter’s wheel. Gera adds sand, ash, ground herbs and spices, crushed clamshells as well as kelp wrappings on her work. Finally, she includes silk and wool fibres, organic materials and beach-combed treasure for even more texture.
We have a wonderful display of Gera’s work at Rainforest Arts. Come and meet her charming Muses, kelp bowls and lots of other treasures.
